Artist Spotlight: Boushra Y. Almutawakel

Boushra Y. Almutawakel is a pioneering Yemeni photographer whose lens bridges cultures, identities, and histories. After studying International Business at the American University in Washington, DC, she first discovered her passion for photography through the university newspaper, yearbook, and a photo lab assistant role. Returning to Yemen in 1994, she continued her professional work in education while nurturing her art. In 1996 she co-founded Al-Halaqa in Sana’a—an artists’ collective and exhibition space that fostered artistic discourse locally and connected Yemen’s creatives with peers overseas.

In 1998 Almutawakel committed to photography full time, balancing commissioned work—ranging from international bodies like the UN, cultural institutions such as the British Council and French Embassy, to commercial and individual clients—with personal, socially resonant projects. She was recognized in 1999 as one of Yemen’s first women photographers. Further honing her craft, she earned a scholarship from World Studio Foundation to the Portfolio Centre in Atlanta (2001-2002), where she won multiple awards and gained publication in leading design and photography journals. Her work has since appeared in Yemen Times, ArtAsiaPacific, El País, Muse, and many international art and photo platforms, bringing Yemeni visual narratives into global view.
