Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon & Pioneer of Transplantation (1932–2025)

The Hanoon Foundation (formerly FQMS) deeply mourns the loss of its patron Sir Terence English.

Sir Terence was a courteous, charming, kind and gentle man with a quiet sense of humour. This belied his ability, integrity, courage, resolve and steely determination which were evident behind everything he did. With his pioneering transplant work, illustrious career as a cardiothoracic surgeon and president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, he made his adopted country, the UK, truly proud. He was also involved in global health and education at several levels including, through the Primary Trauma Care Foundation, supporting and delivering over many years courses in primary trauma care in more than 40 developing countries, including Palestine.  He supported not only our Foundation but also others involved in health care and education in Palestine, including MAP (Medical Aid for Palestinians) and IDEALS (International Disaster & Emergency Aid with Long-term Support).

Sir Terence bravely spoke against injustice in Palestine and championed Gaza well before it was acceptable to do so. In 2012, after one of his visits, he wrote about how much he and the team had come to admire the courage and fortitude with which Gazans faced the aftermath of the invasion and were dealing with the continuing blockade.

On behalf of the Hanoon Foundation, and on behalf of every Palestinian, whether in Palestine or in the diaspora, Hanoon trustees wish to express and record our gratitude, affection, admiration and deep appreciation of this understated giant of a man who felt for the oppressed and had the courage to speak against and stand up to injustice.

On behalf of the Foundation, we also wish to express our deep sympathy and condolences to his wife Judith and children Katherine, Arthur, Mary and William. We feel for your loss.
