I am Ghayda’, a 6th-year medical student, and I had the privilege of completing an elective in the Internal Medicine department at the University of Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. This elective was an incredible learning opportunity that allowed me to refine my clinical skills and deepen my understanding of medical practices in an advanced healthcare setting. It was an experience that not only enriched my medical knowledge but also contributed significantly to my personal growth and professional aspirations.

Throughout my elective, I actively engaged in patient care, participated in case discussions, and performed diagnostic evaluations under the guidance of experienced medical professionals. This exposure to complex internal medicine cases challenged me to think critically and apply evidence-based practices to develop patient-centred care plans. Additionally, I had the opportunity to observe and participate in the management of patients with a wide variety of medical conditions, ranging from acute illnesses to chronic diseases. This involvement allowed me to enhance my clinical decision-making skills and gain a comprehensive understanding of internal medicine practice. Moreover, I participated in lectures organised by the hospital, which provided in-depth knowledge on various medical topics and advanced practices. I also actively engaged in presentations on subjects related to different body systems, fostering my ability to communicate medical information effectively and deepening my understanding of systemic approaches to patient care.

One of the most enriching aspects of my elective was working alongside patients and healthcare providers from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. This experience significantly enhanced my communication skills and cultural competence, enabling me to navigate interactions with individuals from various nationalities and perspectives. It also provided valuable lessons in fostering teamwork and collaboration within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment. Furthermore, becoming familiar with the medical system abroad broadened my understanding of global healthcare practices and exposed me to advanced diagnostic techniques and technologies that I had not previously encountered.

This elective has had a profound impact on my medical training, equipping me with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in clinical settings. The exposure to a collaborative healthcare environment and the emphasis on evidence-based practices have strengthened my ability to approach patient care with critical thinking and adaptability. I feel more confident in my capacity to manage complex medical cases and contribute to improving healthcare outcomes.

Beyond my personal growth, this experience has deepened my resolve to make a meaningful impact on healthcare in Palestine. The advanced practices, innovative approaches, and collaborative strategies I learned during my elective have provided me with the tools to address prevalent health challenges in underserved areas. By integrating these global advancements into local healthcare delivery, I aim to contribute to the development of equitable and effective healthcare systems. My ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between global medical progress and the unique needs of the Palestinian community, fostering innovation and equity in healthcare for all.
