With the support of the Hanoon Foundation, Palestinian medical students gain invaluable clinical experience abroad. Dania, a medical student, recently completed a surgical elective at Oxford University Hospitals in August 2025.

The elective gave her hands-on clinical exposure, observing surgeries, joining ward rounds, and learning from doctors across multiple specialties. She gained key skills in clinical reasoning, patient communication, teamwork, and operative techniques, while also experiencing Oxford’s academic and cultural environment.

“This elective was a truly transformative experience that strengthened my skills, confidence, and determination to serve my community.”

The experience inspired Dania to apply what she has learnt to benefit her community in Palestine.

Testimonial

“Dear Hanoon Foundation Team,

I would like to sincerely thank the Hanoon Foundation for supporting my recent academic visit to Oxford. This opportunity was truly life-changing, and I am deeply grateful for the chance to take part in such a unique experience.

Clinical Experience

Throughout my placement, I attended the hospital daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. I joined ward rounds, observed multiple operations, and learned directly from a wide range of doctors and healthcare professionals. Each day offered new opportunities to expand my medical knowledge, whether through discussions or by seeing how surgical and medical teams work together to provide patient care.

Learning and Skills

I gained extensive knowledge from the rounds, especially in clinical reasoning, patient communication, and evidence-based decision-making. Observing surgeries gave me valuable exposure to operative techniques, theatre etiquette, and the importance of teamwork in surgery. I also had the chance to ask questions and receive advice from doctors across various specialties, which greatly enriched my understanding of medicine and has motivated me in my own career path.

Personal and Cultural Growth

Beyond academics, I benefited from experiencing the atmosphere of Oxford — its culture, history, and academic environment. Meeting students and professionals from different backgrounds broadened my perspective and encouraged me to think more globally about healthcare challenges and solutions.

Reflection

This experience has been one of the most inspiring opportunities of my medical journey so far. It strengthened both my clinical skills and personal confidence while also giving me clearer goals for the future. I am determined to apply what I have learned to improve my studies and, ultimately, to serve my community.

I am truly grateful for the trust and support that the Hanoon Foundation has given me and my colleagues. Thank you for making this possible.
