Dalia, a medical student from the Islamic University of Gaza, reflects on her enriching elective placement in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the National Maternity Hospital (NMH) in Dublin, supported by FQMS/Hanoon Foundation. Despite the ongoing war on Gaza, she found solace in the safe environment of the hospital, which deepened her appreciation for life and the opportunities for learning.

Dalia describes her warm welcome from professors and staff at University College Dublin and NMH, where she received hands-on experience in clinical skills, innovative procedures, and patient care. She highlights the meaningful interactions with patients and the inspiration drawn from witnessing new life, particularly during her active participation in Caesarean sections.

A memorable moment was meeting Dr Michael Robson, the creator of the Ten Group Classification System for monitoring Caesarean rates, which greatly influenced her understanding of maternal healthcare. Dalia also enjoyed the camaraderie with fellow medical students from around the world.
Beyond her medical experience, she explored Ireland’s natural beauty and vibrant culture, feeling moved by the country’s support for Palestine. Dalia expresses hope for the future of medical care in Gaza and gratitude to FQMS/Hanoon Foundation for enabling this transformative experience, concluding with a heartfelt thanks to the organisation.
