PLAB 2 & Clinical Attachments

Supporting Palestinian Junior Doctors in 2025

In 2025, The Hanoon Foundation remains committed to supporting Palestinian medical graduates by covering the costs of clinical attachments, observerships, and the PLAB 2 exam. The PLAB 2, which costs £981, is a key Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment for internationally trained doctors seeking to practise in the UK. By alleviating the financial burden of both the exam and essential clinical training opportunities, The Hanoon Foundation helps Palestinian doctors progress in their careers and overcome significant professional challenges.

This project is funded by The Galilee Foundation.

In 2024, we supported eight junior doctors from Palestine in advancing their careers. In 2025, we aim to expand this effort and support even more graduates in need.

To hear directly from those we’ve supported, please read their testimonials below.

“I am a medical graduate from Gaza. Due to the war, I had to evacuate to Egypt, facing financial difficulties while pursuing my goal of becoming a licensed doctor in the UK. I applied for financial aid from The Hanoon Foundation to help cover the costs of my PLAB 2 exams, which are crucial steps in my career. Receiving this support has been life-changing, allowing me to stay on track with my medical journey despite the challenges. It has given me hope and the opportunity to continue striving for my dream of making a difference in healthcare.”

Testimonial 2

“I graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza in 2022 and completed my internship in 2023, embarking on a determined journey toward a British fellowship in urology. My passion for medicine has driven me to overcome numerous obstacles. After successfully passing the Palestinian board selection exam, I discovered that no positions were available, leaving me at a crossroads in my career. I began preparing for my journey to the UK. At the same time, the devastating war of October 2023 in Gaza forced me to relocate repeatedly for safety, stripping away essential resources such as electricity and internet—critical tools needed for my OET exam, which ultimately led to its cancellation.

In April 2024, determined to continue my path despite these setbacks, I moved to Egypt. There, I seized new opportunities, successfully completing the OET and PLAB 1 exams, and securing an appointment for PLAB 2. This move marked the beginning of a new chapter—one that was not only about academic progress but also about rebuilding a life shattered by conflict and personal loss.

Amid these challenges and the overwhelming financial hardship my family and I faced, the timely support from The Hanoon Foundation became a beacon of hope. I am profoundly grateful for the Foundation’s generosity. Their support has alleviated my financial burdens and reignited my determination to excel in my field. It has empowered me to continue my education and training with renewed vigor, paving the way for me to build a brighter future. I remain committed to honoring their belief in my potential by striving for excellence and contributing meaningfully to the medical community.

Thank you for helping me make my dream come true during one of its most pivotal moments.”

“My name is Mohammed, a medical graduate from Gaza. I am working towards becoming a licensed doctor in the UK, and recently booked the PLAB 2 exam which is a vital step in that journey. Given my financial situation, including relying only on my father who has been out of work for two years, I was struggling to cover the remaining costs of this process after already spending a lot on study materials and exam fees. Receiving this financial support from The Hanoon Foundation has given a huge relief. It has allowed me to stay focused on my preparation and move forward with confidence. I’m truly grateful for this help, which brings me closer to achieving my dream of practicing medicine and giving back to those in need.”

I am extremely grateful to Hanoon Foundation for the financial support that has allowed me to pursue my dreams despite the challenges I have faced. “My name is Bissane, a medical graduate from Gaza, currently pursuing my goal of becoming an Internal Medicine doctor in the UK. After completing my medical degree and internship—part of which I finished during a difficult period of displacement—I began preparing for the PLAB exams, which are essential steps for international medical graduates seeking to practice in the UK.  Coming from a region affected by ongoing conflict and limited economic opportunities, the financial burden of exam fees, travel, and accommodation presented a significant challenge for me. I applied for financial aid from the Hanoon Foundation because I knew that without support, continuing my journey would be incredibly difficult, if not impossible.  Receiving this generous support from the Hanoon Foundation has had a truly transformative impact on both my personal and professional life. It not only eased a heavy financial burden but also gave me a renewed sense of hope, motivation, and encouragement. It reminded me that there are people and organizations that believe in the potential of young professionals from underserved communities.

Thanks to the Hanoon Foundation, I have been able to stay focused on my preparation for PLAB 2 and remain committed to my dream of building a medical career that allows me to serve patients with dedication and compassion—both in the UK and, one day, in Gaza.  I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and will carry the spirit of this support with me throughout my journey. “

“My name is Khaled, a medical doctor from Palestine. I was a cardiology resident at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, where I completed two years of training. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing war, I was displaced from Gaza to Egypt. This forced me to interrupt my residency and seek alterna􀆟ve routes to con􀆟nue my postgraduate medical educa􀆟on. I decided to pursue the UK medical pathway through the Royal College of Surgeons to obtain GMC registration.

I successfully passed the OET exam with a grade B in all subtests. I am grateful to The Hanoon Foundation for reimbursing the exam fees, which enabled me to register for the MRCS examinations. I passed MRCS Part A, and I am scheduled to sit for the Part B (OSCE) on May 20. I have come to the UK to take the OSCE exam and to gain further clinical experience through attachments. I recently completed an eight-week clinical a􀆩achment in the Department of General Medicine at Leicester Royal Infirmary. This experience has significantly broadened my clinical knowledge, enhanced my communica􀆟on and clinical reasoning skills, and deepened my understanding of the NHS system.

Working in a new environment, beyond my comfort zone, has allowed me to collaborate professionally with consultants and NHS staff. These interactions have greatly improved my ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.I firmly believe that UK-based training will equip me with the skills and experience necessary to make a meaningful impact in Gaza. My long-term goal is to return and contribute to the healthcare system by treating patients and supporting the training of junior doctors, helping to alleviate the devasta􀆟ng effects of the war.

During my clinical attachment, I was actively involved in patient care, including case presentations and discussing management plans with consultants. I also delivered a lecture to my colleagues and consultants in the department, and I am planning to participate in a clinical audit. Furthermore, I have secured another four-week clinical attachment. Your support would be invaluable in helping me cover living and exam-related expenses during my stay in the UK. “

Khaled

Testimonial 12

“During my attachment, I conducted a short audit to assess patient satisfaction with the surgical consent process. The audit involved:

– Designing a questionnaire focused on patients’ understanding of the procedure, associated risks, and whether they were given enough time to ask questions.

– Collecting and analysing responses from preoperative patients.

– Identifying areas of improvement in communication and documentation.

– Sharing findings with the relevant department as part of their ongoing quality improvement efforts.

I delivered a teaching session for medical students, junior doctors and consultants on the diagnosis, clinical features, and management of decompensated liver disease. The session was interactive and included case-based discussion. It helped reinforce my own knowledge and improve my teaching skills. “

Ehab

Testimonial 13

“I undertook a six-week clinical attachment in the Department of General Medicine at Leicester Royal Infirmary, which provided me with valuable clinical experience and a comprehensive introduction to the structure and culture of the NHS.  Throughout the attachment, I participated in daily ward rounds where I observed and assisted in patient assessments, case discussions, and care planning. I developed my ability to present clinical cases clearly and concisely to consultants and specialists, and gained confidence in patient communication, history-taking, and physical examination.  Under close supervision, I performed a variety of clinical procedures, which helped improve my practical skills. I also contributed to formulating differential diagnoses and management plans, working closely with the supervising consultant.

The attachment offered me significant exposure to the NHS system, including its electronic health record systems, referral pathways, and team-based approach to patient care. I became more familiar with the roles of various healthcare professionals and learned the importance of effective communication and collaboration in a multidisciplinary environment.  In addition to clinical duties, I attended weekly scientific meetings that enhanced my understanding of evidence-based medicine and current practices in internal medicine. This experience also allowed me to observe the values and patient-centered culture that are central to the NHS. “

My name is Noor, a Palestinian intern doctor aspiring to continue my medical training in the UK. I am truly grateful to the Hanoon Foundation for their generous support during this difficult time. As doctors in Palestine, we currently do not receive any regular salaries, in addition to the challenging economic conditions in the country overall, which have made it nearly impossible for me to afford the high costs of the PLAB 2 exam. Their support has had a significant impact and has enabled me to continue my journey toward GMC registration. I am truly grateful for their continued dedication to helping doctors like me.  In the future, when I am able to secure a job and earn an income, I will donate to the foundation to help ensure the continued support of future doctors.

Thank you for everything.

Testimonial 15

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your generous support in covering the financial costs of my PLAB 2 exam, as well as your earlier assistance with my OET fees. Your continued help has been a turning point in my journey toward becoming a doctor in the UK. Becoming a doctor has always been my dream, not just for personal achievement but to serve and help the people of Gaza, my home. Before the war, I was about to start my residency in the oncology department—something I had worked extremely hard to reach. Unfortunately, due to the escalation of the conflict, I was forced to flee to Egypt with my family after we lost everything. Despite the hardships, I remained determined to pursue my medical career. I began preparing for the UK medical pathway, but saving for the various exam fees while also supporting my family proved incredibly challenging. I took on work with a local organisation in Egypt, which helped me save enough for part of the costs. However, it was still not enough to cover everything.

I came across a post about the Hanoon Foundation’s work in supporting displaced doctors, and I applied. Your organisation helped me first with my OET fees, allowing me to take the initial steps forward. And now, your assistance with my PLAB 2 exam fees, including support for my accommodation and travel to the UK, has made it possible for me to continue this journey. Your support means more than financial aid—it is a lifeline, a reminder that there are people who believe in us and are willing to stand by us in the most difficult of times.

Thank you for believing in me, and thank you for giving me hope. I will carry your kindness with me as I work toward serving others through medicine.

With sincere appreciation.”

“First of all, Hanoon Foundation helped me from the beginning of my journey to do my PLAB exams. Now, due to the support for the PLAB 2 exam, I am able to apply for an academy to get on-ground training to simulate the exam cases. As well as being part of this support i will use it as life expenses during the period before the exam all of this helped me to relax and focus on my studies. I am thankful for the Hanoon organisation.”

“This is a personal and genuine message of gratitude to the Hanoon Foundation for their kindness and generosity. As a doctor who left the Gaza Strip under fire and endured a long and difficult journey to reach the UK in the hope of building a better life for myself and my family, their support has meant so much to me. The help I received has lifted a heavy burden and allowed me to focus fully on preparing for the PLAB examination and pursuing my career as a doctor. Their willingness to stand with their fellow Palestinians in times of need is deeply inspiring, and I will always remember the solidarity they showed me.”

Thank you for attending

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday, 17th May 2025, for the special fundraising concert for The Hanoon Foundation, organised by Meshwar. The evening featured the wonderful Palestinian singer Leen Al Faqih, who performed folklore and heritage songs alongside a talented ensemble and choir.

About Leen Alfaqih

A Palestinian voice that embodies the spirit of the homeland and revolution and one of the most exciting new artists to emerge from the Middle East. A multilingual artist who sings in Arabic, French, Spanish, and English. Leen is inspired by a range of East-meets-West styles, including Jazz, Bolero, Latin, Oriental, and Arabic music. Through her songs, she expresses love for the land, the voice of the people, and resistance through art. Alongside her musical career, she holds a master’s degree in Violence Against Women and Children, with a special focus on refugee affairs and the role of music in supporting refugee children through psychological and social interventions. In her academic research, she highlights the therapeutic role of art and music in alleviating trauma and promoting psychological healing in children. Leen seamlessly blends art with science, using her voice as a tool for advocacy, healing, and the pursuit of Palestinian freedom.

Key Concerts in Her Musical Career

On August 25, 2022, Leen Al Faqih performed a remarkable concert in Amman at the prestigious Dr. Mohammad Hamdan Theater, located within the International Academy – Amman (IAA). This exceptional concert showcased her unique ability to blend diverse musical influences, skillfully merging Western, Eastern, and Latin styles to deliver a harmonious and emotionally moving musical experience. The evening featured timeless patriotic songs alongside a selection of deeply moving pieces. Accompanied by a 20 musicians and a vibrant youth choir, Leen’s powerful and versatile voice filled the venue, leaving an unforgettable impression on the audience. This concert was a testament to her extraordinary talent and her deep connection to Palestinian cultural heritage, marking a significant milestone in her artistic journey.

On February 8, 2024, Leen Al Faqih captivated audiences at the prestigious Spring of Culture Festival in Bahrain, taking listeners on a mesmerizing musical journey through national and revolutionary songs inspired by Palestine’s rich heritage. These songs carried deep national emotions, blending echoes of the past with the spirit of the present. Held at the Cultural Hall in Manama, the concert drew a full house, with an enthusiastic audience singing along passionately. Leen’s unique ability to fuse traditional melodies with modern influences created an extraordinary atmosphere, uniting generations and breathing new life into Palestinian heritage. With her powerful and expressive voice, backed by a professional ensemble of musicians, she performed a repertoire that honored Palestine’s musical legacy while reflecting the broader Arab identity. The night was filled with a spirit of unity and collective nostalgia, as her patriotic and revolutionary songs forged an emotional bond between the audience and their homeland, making it an unforgettable experience for all.

His ability to continue to get study aids, group learning when possible by zoom and keeping an open mind for his final career choice. “Words seem to dance upon these lines, inadequate to fully express the overflowing emotions of gratitude and profound appreciation for the generous scholarship of one thousand US dollars that you have bestowed upon me. This grant is not merely financial support; it is a beacon of light illuminating my path toward realising my ultimate dream of studying human medicine, a powerful impetus that has awakened hopes within my soul that were on the verge of fading under the weight of the harsh living and economic circumstances burdening my family and standing as a genuine obstacle to the completion of my university education…. My passion for studying medicine stems from a sincere desire to serve the people of my homeland and alleviate their suffering, and I aspire to be a humane physician and a researcher dedicated to finding solutions to the health challenges facing our society. This invaluable scholarship that you have so kindly granted is a true lifeline for me, as it will enable me to continue my education without the constant worry about the financial burdens that were threatening my academic future.

“I want to say thank you from all my heart. You gave me a chance when I thought my dream was over. I always wanted to be a doctor, but because of my hard life, I couldn’t register. My family is very poor. My father has no job because of the war. My sister has autism and needs care all the time. We don’t have money for her treatment.

Also, I lost my cousin in the war. He was shot and started bleeding a lot. There was no hospital near us, and the road to the city was too long. We tried to take him, but he died on the way. If there had been a clinic near our village, maybe he would still be alive. That moment broke my heart forever.

Since that day, I promised myself to become a doctor — not just for me, but for people like him, for families who live far from hospitals. Because of your help, I can now study. I will never forget this. Inshallah, one day I will be a doctor who helps the poor, the forgotten, and the people who live in villages like mine. I will volunteer and give free care to those who need it, just like you gave me this chance.

You didn’t just help me go to school — you saved my dream, my future, and maybe, one day, someone else’s life. Thank you for believing in me when I had nothing.”

“I have just received the financial assistance you provided, and it came at exactly the right time. I send you my deepest appreciation for your generous efforts.

I am a third-year medical student. I live with my mother and brother. My father passed away when I was two years old, and since then, my mother has been our sole provider. She worked in many freelance jobs, but since she did not complete her school education, it was difficult for her to find steady work. She used to sell chickens and second-hand furniture to support us. Now my mother is 56 years old, and most of the jobs she used to do are no longer available. Covering the costs of my education has become increasingly difficult. With the current situation, transportation costs have also increased, and as I enter my fourth year, the cost per academic hour will rise significantly.

Thanks to your help, my educational page on the university website was reopened, and a portion of my accumulated debts was paid off. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your wonderful organisation has made a real difference in our lives. You are truly special people. It feels as if God sent you to us so we could continue our journey, dreams, and goals.

My ambition is to become someone like you. I hope to specialise in surgery and support students who face special circumstances, just as I have.
Thank you so much for everything you’ve done. I hope to meet you one day when I have become a surgeon.”

This grant has come at a critical time in my academic journey. Due to financial hardship and accumulating debt, I have been under immense pressure, which has at times threatened to affect my studies and overall well-being. Your support has allowed me to pay off a portion of that debt and lifted a significant burden off my shoulders. It has enabled me to focus more on my education, regain peace of mind, and continue pursuing my dream of becoming a medical professional.
I want to assure you that your generosity will not be taken for granted. This grant is a powerful motivation for me to strive harder, to maintain academic excellence, and to give back to my community through compassionate and quality healthcare services. It is my goal to become someone who carries forward the values of support, dedication, and service that you have demonstrated.
Thank you once again for your trust, for your generosity, and for believing in my potential. I hope one day to be in a position where I can extend the same support to others.

With sincere appreciation and respect, “

Mr. Khaled Dawas, Vice Chair of the Hanoon Foundation, Visits Palestine – April 2025

In April 2025, Mr. Khaled Dawas, Vice Chair of the Hanoon Foundation, travelled to Palestine to strengthen partnerships and explore new opportunities for collaboration. During his trip, he visited our partners at Al Najah Medical School, met with the dean of Al Quds Medical School, and conducted site visits to the Istiishari Hospital in Ramallah, where our colleague Dr. Shtaya serves as Head of Neurosurgery, as well as the Bethlehem Arab Rehabilitation Hospital.

Mr. Dawas also had the opportunity to see the anatomy lab funded by the Hanoon Foundation in Nablus, where he discussed our ongoing work and future needs with the deans.

Everyone he met during the trip expressed a strong interest in pursuing further collaborations, recognising the significant benefits of our work together.

Ramadan Volunteering Initiative

During the blessed month of Ramadan, a time for reflection, growth, and spiritual renewal, I, along with two of my colleagues, launched a meaningful volunteering initiative. Recognising the sacredness of this holy month and the importance of reconnecting with our faith, we sought to encourage fellow university-level medical students to reduce their screen time and engage more deeply in religious practices and positive habits.

Each of the three organisers was responsible for mentoring five students, ensuring personal guidance and strong motivation within the smaller groups. Over the course of five days, we designed a carefully structured schedule that combined religious activities with personal development goals.

Each day, students were encouraged to complete specific tasks such as reading one Juz’ (twenty pages) of the Quran, performing Sunnah prayers, reciting daily Azkar (morning and evening supplications), memorising selected Surahs, and participating in a special daily religious challenge. These challenges included acts such as reading Surat Al-Mulk before sleeping, consistently seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) 100 times daily, and dedicating moments to private Dhikr (remembrance of Allah).

The project was not only about individual spiritual enhancement but also about fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among students. Through active participation, we observed a growing enthusiasm, with students frequently discussing their progress, motivating each other, and reflecting on the impact these simple practices had on their days.

Feedback from participants was deeply heartwarming. Many students described the initiative as transformative. One student shared, “This program made my Ramadan feel truly special. I found myself looking forward to completing the schedule every day and felt a deep spiritual satisfaction.” Another commented, “It opened my eyes to how much time I was wasting before. Now I appreciate the peace that comes from turning to prayer and the Quran instead of my phone.”

Several students expressed a desire to continue these habits even beyond Ramadan, viewing the experience as a new beginning rather than a temporary change.

For us, as organisers, this initiative was a profound learning experience. We witnessed firsthand the immense power of community-driven motivation and the deep human need for spiritual connection, especially in an age of constant digital distraction. It reinforced our belief that even small, well-structured efforts can lead to significant personal transformation.

Moving forward, we are determined to expand this initiative to reach even more students in future Ramadans. We envision larger groups, richer schedules, and perhaps even physical gatherings or workshops to deepen the bonds of brotherhood and faith.

Above all, we are grateful for the opportunity to serve during this holy time and to have contributed, even modestly, to the spiritual journeys of our peers.

Updates from Othman – Teaching Fellow

Updates from Othman – Teaching Fellow

Teaching Fellow – Faculty of Medicine, IUG

Over the past year, Othman, a Teaching Fellow at the Islamic University of Gaza (IUG), was supported by the Hanoon Foundation in helping displaced medical students continue their education. He successfully placed over 50 students in Turkey, Pakistan, and South Africa, adapted teaching methods to online courses and exams, facilitated internships, and initiated a project on the impact of war on medical education, which was presented internationally. Testimonial

Over the past year, my work as a Teaching Fellow at the Islamic University of Gaza (IUG) Medical School, with the invaluable support of the Hanoon Foundation, has been both deeply challenging and incredibly rewarding. Together, we navigated unprecedented circumstances to ensure that displaced medical students could continue their education and training despite the disruption caused by conflict.

Through tireless coordination and collaboration, we successfully placed over 50 displaced students across Turkey, Pakistan, and South Africa. Our first batch of students in Turkey not only completed their theoretical and clinical requirements under the supervision of displaced faculty but also successfully graduated, a milestone that stands as a testament to their resilience and the collective effort behind them.

In Pakistan, we established a full two-year curriculum for our students in close coordination with the host institution. We implemented strong monitoring systems to maintain high academic standards and support the students throughout their journey. Meanwhile, in South Africa, another group of students is on track to graduate this summer, with plans well underway to secure internship placements for them, particularly in Turkey and Pakistan.

Recognising the importance of continuous clinical exposure, we also facilitated at least six months of internship training for the students based in Turkey, and now we are exploring the potential for implementing it in Pakistan, ensuring they gain the practical experience necessary to move forward confidently in their careers.

Beyond placements, we adapted our teaching methods to the realities of displacement by delivering online courses and examinations, maintaining the academic rigour our students deserve. We also initiated a project studying the impact of war on medical education, which evolved into a case study focused on sustaining clinical training during crisis periods. This work was presented internationally at a conference in Doha, Qatar, allowing us to share insights and advocate for innovative educational models in times of conflict.

Looking back, this past year has been a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when resilience, collaboration, and purpose come together. It has been an honour to support these future doctors as they continue their journey, and I am deeply grateful to the Hanoon Foundation and all our partners for making this possible.

Fundraiser in Aid of The Hanoon Foundation – June Event

Thank you for attending

Dear Friends and Supporters,

On behalf of The Hanoon Foundation (THF), we would like to thank everyone who joined us at our June fundraising event co-organised with Voices of Palestine (VoP) at The Dorchester Hotel on 22nd June 2025.
Please check out the news coverage of the event from the new arab and TRT.

We were truly moved by the overwhelming support shown throughout the night and warmly welcome any feedback you wish to share. Thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised over £250,000 net, after covering all expenses. This achievement will directly benefit Palestinian medical students and address urgent gaps in healthcare education. In light of the ongoing crisis in Palestine, we will focus on rehabilitation projects, where your support will have both immediate and lasting impact. The event began with a warm welcome from Yosra Elgonaid of VoP, setting a positive tone for the evening.

Dr Ahmed Massoud, Chairman of THF, presented the vital work of the organisation, highlighting its programmes and the urgent challenges facing Palestinian medical students.

This was followed by a heartfelt speech from H.E. Dr. Husam Zomlot, the Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, who focused on the broader challenges facing Palestine and the resilience of its people.

Many thanks to Dr Lina Hadid for her invaluable support and inspiring speech, which deeply resonated with all attendees and underscored the significance of the cause we are all committed to.

The auction with Ed Rising was a highlight of the evening. Special thanks to Zayna Al-Saleh, the curator, and all the talented artists who generously donated their artworks. Congratulations to all the winning bidders of the artwork and luxury items. Your generosity made a tremendous difference, and we deeply appreciate your continued commitment to our cause. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made donations, pledges, or volunteered—your support was invaluable and helped make the evening such a success.

The panel discussed the unprecedented attacks on the Palestinian medical sector and their far-reaching implications. We were honoured to be joined by distinguished panellists — Dr Selma Dabbagh, Dr Ahmed Mukhalalati, Prof. Merissa Khurma, Mr Daniel Levy, and Prof. Tara Kangarlou — who shared powerful insights and reflections.

The evening concluded with an unforgettable musical performance by Le Trio Joubran—three Palestinian brothers, Samir, Wissam and Adnan, from a distinguished family of master ‘Oud’ makers. Their performance deeply touched the audience, leaving a lasting impression on us all.
